Working at The Grange
Working at The Grange
The Grange has approximately a quarter of its teaching staff hired from outside Chile. They need to be qualified of course, native speakers of English and experienced in the classroom. Our recruitment policy is to advertise in the Times Educational Supplement in May or June for the start of our Academic Year the following March, although we also invite applicants interested in arranging employment even further in advance to apply early. Contracts need to be signed and sealed before work visas may be applied for, so the sooner we make firm commitments the better. Generally, we should be well on the way to completing all the process by November for arrival of staff the following February.

Our academic year begins for pupils around 1st March but staff are required to be here for training and preparation in their departments a couple of weeks earlier. The expatriate staff is paid according to experience on the Grange Salary Scale and the salary paid is calculated to include all requirements such as accommodation, pension, taxation, health insurance, etc. Salary levels are high compared both to local levels and to expatriate ones working in other Santiago schools, and we live in a country where the costs are probably around 60-70% of those the United Kingdom. Most teachers find they are able to enjoy excellent living standards compared with those they enjoyed in their home country.

Aside from the economic aspects, living in Santiago has a great many intangible benefits, including access to ski resorts within an hour’s drive, the Pacific coast two hours away, the opportunity to travel nationally in a country that spans great diversity from dry deserts to lush southern forests. Access to the other Latin American countries is efficient and relatively inexpensive, and the unique opportunities of Easter Island and Antarctic tourism are readily available for those prepared to be a little more adventurous.
